Frequently asked questions
- What is a word unscrambler?
- A word unscrambler takes a set of letters and finds every valid word that can be made from those letters. It is useful for word games like Scrabble, Words with Friends, Wordle, anagram puzzles, and vocabulary practice.
- How do wildcards work?
- Type a question mark (?) in place of any unknown letter. Each ? acts as a blank tile and can represent any letter from A to Z. For example, entering "ca?" returns words like "cab", "can", "cap", "car", "cat", "caw", and more.
- Can I use this as a Scrabble word finder?
- Yes. The dictionary includes standard Scrabble-valid words, and every result shows a Scrabble-style point score so you can quickly identify the highest-scoring play. Use the length and prefix/suffix filters to match the board constraints.
- Does it work for Words with Friends?
- Mostly yes. The Scrabble and Words with Friends dictionaries overlap significantly. The vast majority of results are valid in both games, though the two word lists differ slightly. Use the tool as a strong starting point for both games.
- What does the point score next to each word mean?
- The score is based on standard Scrabble letter values (A=1, B=3, C=3 … Z=10). It is the raw tile sum before any board multipliers. Longer, rarer words generally score higher.
- Is there a limit on how many letters I can enter?
- The tool works best with 2–15 letters. You can include up to two ? wildcards. Entering more letters is possible but results may be very large; use the length or filter options to narrow them down.
- What dictionary does this tool use?
- Results are drawn from a comprehensive English word list covering over 350 000 words. The list is curated for word-game use and excludes proper nouns, abbreviations, and non-standard entries.
- Is this tool free to use?
- Yes. Word Unscrambler is completely free with no account, sign-up, or download required. There are no limits on the number of searches.
